There is little known about German Army, but a list of uncountable releases on Opal Tapes, Tourette Records, Belaten and other labels no less obscure speaks for itself. This redundant productivity can confuse but in this case we deal with something much more interesting and important then a mania.
German Army consists of PK and GT who live in San Bernardino, California. The City of Angels is only 100 kilometers away, but San Bernardino is the exact opposite of Los Angeles. A poor and abandoned metropolis, which people hardly recall except in relation to the terrorist attack in 2015.
Origins of German Army records are quite obvious: a dusty sound burned with the unkind sun and short tracks that end up faster than the unemployment benefit. But the defining emotion of the music is not a despair, ibit overwhelming weirdness. In this respect, the closest stylistic reference point is Novy Svet (no wonder Jürgen Weber has a split with PK and GT). There is difference still. Weirdness of Novy Svet is autoerotic and homemade. With German Army we are dealing rather with notes of an anthropologist who captures bizarre customs of an unfamiliar tribe.
German Army fields recordings both in literal and figurative sense of the word. This explains scrap sounds, splashes in the fields and illegible handwriting. Redundancy arises from an artistic/ethnographic desire to give a 'thick' description' of strange phenomena.
In ‘Fermin’ title one can hear the name of Antenor Firmin, the first black anthropologist and Haitian fame, hence the Caribbean themes can be distinguished in the names of the tracks. However, something went terribly wrong with the expedition sent by German Army, so the title swirls into apocalyptic visions.
‘Fermin’ is hardly a field diary of a sober scientist. Better to talk about feverish notes on the cuffs, on the underside of maps, about 'over-thickened description'. Their author has caught an exotic virus and he raves, not aware of who and where he is, in his office, in the jungles, or in the garage of depressive Californian city. Painfully gazing at the figure of the Other, he found himself hallucinating in front of a broken mirror.
